Sufjan Stevens’ Chicago is one of the defining indie rock songs of the early 2000s, celebrated for its raw emotional sincerity, dense melodic and percussive layering, and an undeniably catchy chorus. This arrangement written for NewStream Brass for brass ensemble reimagines the song through the rich sonorities and expressive power of brass and percussion while aiming to preserve the spirit and atmosphere of the original. The arrangement draws heavily from the layered textures and gradual emotional build that make Stevens’ version so compelling. Warm chorales, rhythmic percussion writing, and singing melodic lines allow the ensemble to capture both the intimacy and intensity at the heart of the song.
